On 13th March 2012, Beech Hall was resounding to the chants of “A ten hour day for no less pay!”  Pupils from Year 6 to Year 8, dressed in Victorian costumes, had joined Richard Oastler, the King of the Factory Children, on a march through the school grounds petitioning for a 10 hour working day.  They were, once again, in role play taking part in an in an Inter-active Drama, The Runaway Apprentice, based on true accounts of the Cotton Mill children. Before the march, our pupils had watched the Lunchbox Theatre Company’s performance by Christine Burn of the Runaway Apprentice, during which they had the opportunity to take part in the action, meeting Queen Victoria, signing indentures, working in the mill, etc.  This was followed by a workshop of “How to Write a Play using Improvisation”.

It proved to be a very exciting afternoon in which the children had gained a blend of historical knowledge and drama skills.  It was another successful cross curricular experience.

It looks great!

]]> http://beechhallschool.org/diamond-jubilee-knitting-club/feed/ 0 BHPA Infant Plant A Pot http://beechhallschool.org/bhpa-infant-plant-a-pot/ http://beechhallschool.org/bhpa-infant-plant-a-pot/#comments Tue, 08 May 2012 20:23:37 +0000 Helen Roberts http://beechhallschool.org/?p=3457 Last Friday, all the children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 spent the morning learning how to grow flowers.  The keen gardeners put it all into practice by filling their own pot with compost and planting a variety of different plants.  All the children are looking forward to seeing what colour flowers [...]]]> Last Friday, all the children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 spent the morning learning how to grow flowers.  The keen gardeners put it all into practice by filling their own pot with compost and planting a variety of different plants.  All the children are looking forward to seeing what colour flowers their plants will have and as a grand total of 277 plants were potted the school will soon be in full bloom.  The pots will be displayed until the end of term, after which the children will be able to take them home.  If you notice the plants are looking thirsty we would like to encourage anyone to help with watering them, especially during all the hot spells we’re hoping to have this summer.  All the pots are named so the children can make an extra special effort to look after their own pot. The watering cans are beside the outside tap by the art room, but please supervise any younger children when filling them.  A big thank you to Mrs Henning, Mrs Palmes, Mrs Nobes and Mrs Ringham for all their help on the day.

It was an afternoon that brought the whole School together.  The challenge was to complete a Sport Relief Mile, if not more, on the Middlewood Way.  Some pupils chose to run headed by Mrs Farmer and Mr Johnson, others jogged or walked and one pupil even “skipped” along in his dustbin costume, with me sweeping up behind!

As always, it was a fun afternoon with all pupils and staff participating, some in fancy dress, but with a serious side too – highlighting an awareness of the needs of others and our ability to help in some small way.

Music this year is being provided by DJ Stu Kelsall, so don’t forget to include your Play List of all the tunes you like to bop along too together with your Ticket Application by Friday 1 June 2012.

There will be prizes for the winning [...]]]> The BHPA is delighted to announce that it will be running a digital photography competition for all the pupils in the School from Reception through to Year 11. We are very pleased to advise that Carlton Adkins from Capture Portraits has agreed to judge the event. There will be prizes for the winning Infant, Junior & Senior photographs and the winners from each department will have their photos printed onto a canvas by Print It (Northwest) Ltd. Carlton has also kindly agreed to share his expertise to the winner of the Senior photograph with a photography lesson for themselves and an adult in his studio located on Chestergate, Macclesfield.

The theme for the competition is “In the garden”, so put on your thinking caps! Your photograph could include anything from wildlife, people, pets, objects, sky scenes, whatever you may see in or from your garden – let you imagination run riot!

We would advise that your photos should be taken on a digital camera and not an iPod or mobile phone, as otherwise we may not be able to reproduce your photograph should you win. Entries should be emailed to the BHPA no later than Friday 15 June 2012 and please don’t forget to include your name and class with your entry and only one entry per child please.

]]> http://beechhallschool.org/bhpa-digital-photography-competition/feed/ 0 Years 3 & 4 History Trip to Chester http://beechhallschool.org/years-3-4-history-trip-to-chester/ http://beechhallschool.org/years-3-4-history-trip-to-chester/#comments Sun, 29 Apr 2012 17:45:25 +0000 Helen Roberts http://beechhallschool.org/?p=3392 History was brought alive for Years 3 and 4 when as part of their History studies “Roman Invaders”, they took part in the Dewa Roman Experience.  The ‘Museum’ and ‘City Patrol’ offered a unique insight into Roman Chester 2000 years ago.  It was an exciting day as the children [...]]]> Soldier CertificateHistory was brought alive for Years 3 and 4 when as part of their History studies “Roman Invaders”, they took part in the Dewa Roman Experience.  The ‘Museum’ and ‘City Patrol’ offered a unique insight into Roman Chester 2000 years ago.  It was an exciting day as the children had the opportunity to explore the reconstructed fortress of the XXth Legion Vateria Victrix (‘Brave & Victorious’ Twentieth Legion).  Experiencing sights, sounds and smells of Roman Britain.  Much fun was had trying on full-size Roman Armour, firing a catapult and handling genuine archaeological finds.  Key points of how archaeologists piece together clues from the past were highlighted on inspection of the dig occupied on site and many artefacts from Chester and the Roman Empire on display were viewed with enthusiasm.  A pair of tweezers is the only tool that has not changed in style in 2000 years.

As can be seen from the Roman Soldier Certificate gained, our pupils successfully completed basic military training, having marched through the streets of Chester and along the City walls led by Walkus Crispus!

They returned to School equipped with lots of Roman knowledge gained from their experience.  (Now to work …)

All of the pupils were dressed as Victorian children full of excitement for the day that lay ahead.  They were going to Styal Mill to experience, by participating in hands on activities, what life was like for children working at the Mill during the Victorian era.

Through role play at the Apprentice House and an informative guided tour of the Mill, they returned to Beech Hall able to make comparisons between education, behaviour, medication, food, lifestyle and working conditions for children in Victorian Times and that of today.

We experienced a wonderful day and all of the pupils were highly commended by the Styal Tour Guides on their costumes and attentive behaviour.
