“Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life critical to science, technology and engineering and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high- quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.”

Here at Beech Hall the ethos of the Maths department is in line with the above statement and the aim of the Maths scheme of work is consistent with the National Curriculum in Mathematics and the AQA GCSE specifications.

Maths is a core subject and is taught by form teachers in the infant and junior departments. Throughout the Junior school we aim to encourage an enjoyment of the subject through practical based activities, exploration and independent activities. As they move through the department they extend their understanding through problem-solving activities. In the Senior School, pupils reinforce and develop topics learned throughout Key Stages 1 and 2. These key skills are the foundations of the GCSE course that begins in Year 9 and is certified at the end of Year 11.

During lessons pupils are taught in a meaningful context whilst providing opportunities for them to use their skills creatively through problem solving and investigation by completing activities and experiences either as a group or individually, e.g. practical work, observation, talking and listening, reflection reading and writing. By actively involving the children it helps to foster independent learning and informed planning. The department encourages children to work to their full potential within lessons and at home to experience a sense of achievement. It is recognised however, that sometimes additional help might be needed to develop some individual pupil‘s skills and this is given by an assistant within the classroom or within the Learning Support Department.

Throughout the school cross-curricular and every- day life topics are recognised and reinforced by working closely with other departments or outside organisations e.g. Science, Geography, ICT, D&T and Financial Management. This enables pupils to further develop the mathematical skills and understanding required for adult life, for employment and for further study and training.
